Driving theory test - Case study

Improvements to driving theory test

A new element is being introduced to the driving theory exam to test learners on their understanding of driving, rather than just their knowledge of the facts.

From 28 September 2009, one case study will be included in the exam for car drivers, moped and motorcycle riders.

As part of the multiple choice section of the test, the case study will assess candidates' understanding of driving theory, while the multiple choice questions will continue to assess their knowledge of the subject.

The theory test case study will take the form of a scenario, or short story, on which five questions will
be based. Candidates will answer the questions in the same way as they do now, using either the touch screen or mouse.

If you have understood all the current questions in the DSA theory test question bank, then there is no need to worry.

So multiple choice element of the theory test will be of
  • 45 multiple choice questions = 45 marks
  • One case study scenario with 5 questions to answer = 5 marks
  • The pass mark = 43/50
Click here to see an example case and the questions What DSA says about the new case studies section in theory test? DSA's Director of Driver Education and Learning, Jill Lewis, said: "Case studies are widely used in education to put learning into context and test comprehension of a subject, so many candidates will have encountered this type of question before.

Initially we are introducing one case study based on existing questions in the theory test question bank, to get candidates used to the concept. It will also allow us to monitor any impact on the theory test. Over time, we plan to introduce more case studies into the theory test to assess candidates' understanding of what they have learned."

Ways to pass driving test

Multiple choice test is the first part of driving theory test which consist of 50 questions out of which you need to answer 43 questions right and the time limit is 57 minutes. You can also go for a practice session of the multiple choice questions to get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin. This session is being designed to test your understanding of the theory behind driving.

Driving test:

There are two parts of driving theory test i.e. multiple-choice test and the hazard perception test. Both must be passed in the same attempt to get theory test certificate. Once you clear driving theory test then only you will be able to appear for driving practical test.

Hazard perception test is the second part of driving theory test in which you will be shown 14 clips of 1 minute each having 15 hazards in all (1 clip will have 2 hazards respectively). Once you are done with hazard perception test you'll be invited to answer few customer survey questions. This session is designed to test your alertness of potential hazards whilst driving.

Unlike multiple choice questions, for the hazard perception test there are no separate versions for different vehicles e.g. car, bike, heavy vehicle etc, each vehicle category takes the same test, however the pass mark is different for different categories of tests.

If you pass one part and fail the other you will fail the whole driving theory test, and need to attempt for both the test again.

4. Why hazard perception clips so important in driving theory test

Hazard perception test has been introduced in the driving theory test since new drivers are irrationally involved in accidents, mostly in the first months after passing a driving test. It has been demonstrated that drivers who have taken hazard perception test training have much better hazard test skills.

Hazard perception clips plays a very vital role as it reduces number of deaths on the roads. While driving there are some hazards driver has to look such as huge vehicles moving over to your side of the road, loose pets and farmyard animals, changes in the traffic movement and volume, junctions and roundabouts, horse riders, weather conditions of the day, road surfaces, parked vehicles, hidden junctions and turns.

A driver has to face all this obstacles and make his own way. It is a process where examinee will be shown 14 clips out of which there will be 15 hazards.
